How do local occupational taxes work in Hardin County?
Hardin County has more than one local tax, and which one applies depends on where the work is done:
- Unincorporated Hardin County: since January 1, 2024, the county’s occupational license tax covers all of unincorporated Hardin County. It applies to wages earned there and to business net profits from activity there. Businesses also register with the Hardin County Treasurer.
- City of Elizabethtown: the city has its own occupational license tax on wages and net profits earned inside city limits.
- Radcliff, Vine Grove and other cities: each city sets its own local taxes, and we file them for you.
The county notes that a business without a physical location in the district can still owe the tax if it works there. That matters for contractors and service businesses that travel to job sites around the county. Pass-through businesses such as partnerships and S corporations are taxed at the business level under the county ordinance.
